Tours of Tuscany

We offer small group personalised and curated tours with up to 8 people maximum to visit small hilltop villages in the province of Siena and Arezzo, areas made famous in such stories and films as ‘Under a Tuscan Sun’, ‘Life is Beautiful’  and ‘Eat, Pray Love’.  

The tour commences and is based in Montepulciano in a working carefully restored Farmhouse at the foothills of the majestic and historical hilltop village of Montepulciano. The village is in the province of Siena and is easily arrived to by train.

From an artistic point of view, Montepulciano, is also known, as ‘The pearl of the Renaissance’.  Over the centuries, the village has been home to many important architects, painters and sculptors of the Renaissance period. The well-appointed location offers the possibility to immerse oneself in its rich and powerful history.


Majestic Montepulciano

Montepulciano is surrounded by wonderful landscapes with its rolling hills, beautiful vineyards, lakes, charming olive groves, lovely farmhouses and its enchantingly delightful villages overlooking the world-famous Val d'Orcia landscapes.

The area is the source of some of the most famous wines in the world. Rising from these vineyards, the Vino Nobile of Montepulciano is produced in harmony with century old traditions. 

The 7 day tour will include visits to the following locations.

South of Siena, sitting upon a fairy-tale Tuscan hilltop lies Montalcino, protected by a mighty castle of medieval perfection and scarcely unchanged since the Renaissance era. 

Set amidst gentle undulating hills and wonderful natural landscapes, Pienza enjoys a strategic position standing high atop a hill, dominating all the Orcia Valley with extraordinary views. 

Under the Tuscan Sun basks Cortona, a small charming town in the Valdichiana. Cortona has had the spotlight on it since Frances Mayes wrote about renovating her house, “Casa Bramasole” in her novel Under a Tuscan Sun.,

Sitting close to the border between Umbria and Tuscany, we visit Anghiari,, a medieval jewel set on a stone hilltop on the banks of the River Tiber.Anghiari, is considered one of the "most beautiful villages in Italy" and received the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club. 

 Montepulciano is a medieval town of rare beauty full of elegant Renaissance palaces, ancient churches, charming squares and hidden corners. The village boasts extensive panoramas across the beautiful Val d'Orcia and Val di Chiana valleys.

Villages to visit

The tours are structured and can be tailored to suit groups. Most medieval villages were built as hilltop fortifications, wherever possible our driver will take the tour as close as possible to the starting point. During the tours there can be a lot of walking and you will spend a lot of time on your feet while sightseeing.

Being healthy and physically fit is important to make the most of our tours. Often the streets are cobblestone and can be uneven and we often will walk to the top of village, of course all levels of participation are your choice and you are always most welcome to explore the villages at your own pace.

Food and Wine

During this seven day tour you will experience some of the best food and wines that Italy has to offer, carefully selected restaurants and venues that showcase the exceptional local products. The entire tour is curated for its opportunity to sample local delicacies.

Food and wine are a key component to the Italian sense of cultural identity and the relationship to food and the practice of eating and drinking.

Your tour includes 7 continental breakfasts each, 6 lunches and 5 dinners together with local wines and coffee through the tour. From Castles and fortresses to medieval villages you will be enchanted by the culinary experience offered on your adventure.

The kitchen is central to the hearts and minds of Italian families. Pizza, pasta from gnocchi to Lasagna, fettuccini to the ever popular spaghetti Bolognese are all classic Italian iconic dishes. Chianti, Prosecco and Spritz are household names in many countries, add the wide array of internationally recognised desserts and sweets as such as, gelato, tiramisu and cannoli and now most of the Western world and beyond can immediately identify with ‘la dolce vita’ which is represented by Italian Culture and its relationship to food.

Federico Fellini described it thus:  "Life is a combination of magic and pasta."

This natural focus on enogastromia led to the founding in 2007 of the Queensland delegation of the Accademia Italiana della Cucina, Alessandro was the Delegate and founding member of the not for profit organization which was founded in 1953 in Milan Italy. The Accademia is recognized by the Italian Ministry for Cultural Affairs as a ‘Cultural Institution’ with the purpose of protecting the immense heritage of Italian Cuisine and viticulture.

Your 7 day tour will commence and end at the beautiful medieval hilltop of Montepulciano and your accommodation is in a tastefully restored Tuscan farmhouse.

The Farmhouse is located as part of an working agritourism which is situated at 1 km from the historical centre of Montepulciano in a charming position from which you can admire the hilltop village of Montepulciano, the Valdichiana valley, Lake Trasimeno and the mountains of the Umbro-Marche appennines.

The farm has an area of approximately 10 hectares, of which 5 are vineyard, 2 olive groves and 3 orchards producing exclusive plums and other delicious local fruit.

There are various forms of accommodation from guest rooms with private bathrooms in the farmhouse to one and two bedroom apartments each with its own bathroom for your comfort.

Breakfast and Dining room at the Farmhouse

On the ground floor of the building called ‘the olive grove’ there is the reception where you can acquire produce from the farm including olive oil, wine, jam and pasta. Breakfast is served in the dining room with buffet selection including local salami, cheeses and homemade desserts.

Other services that you will have at the farmhouse are:

  • Internet wireless across farm areas and reception. 

  • There is also a laundry, where one can wash clothes as well as iron.

  • There is satellite TV in each apartment.

  • There is also a 14m x 7m swimming pool which is available to use.

  • From the summer of 2010, the farm is now energy self-sufficient and runs on a solar powered system.

  • Transfers from and to Montepulciano train station on arrival and departure days.

  • Transfers to and from the local train station or Cortona on tour free days.

  • 2 wine tastings including in the Fortezza di Montalcino with the super Tuscan wines of Brunello di Montalcino
