Why Visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore?

While you may want to take a look at a number of the different landmarks and attractions located in the region of Tuscany, it may be a wise idea to ensure that you don’t overlook the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.

This majestic structure dates back many years and is famous for being one of the largest cathedrals in the world. When the construction of the building had finished during the 15th century, it was the biggest in Europe. Almost anyone who decides to take a trip to Tuscany should make plans to visit this stunning site.

The history of the Santa Maria del Fiore

Arnolfo di Cambio created the initial designs for this magnificent cathedral, but the finished structure is quite a bit different to how it was originally envisioned. While he had worked on the church in the beginning of its construction (which stated towards the end of the 12th century), he unfortunately died in 1310, leaving the work to the Arte della Lana 20 years later.

The project was going well until the year of the Black Death, but despite the fact that the city’s population was halved during this terrible time, construction work didn’t stop and continued until it was finished many years later (although many people were put in charge of the project as time went by).

Despite all this, the construction of a new façade (which lasted from 1871 to 1884) was one of the most important operations of them all. Taken care of by Emilio De Fabris and his team, it was designed to closer resemble the styles of the bell tower and the side doors of the cathedral.

As the years passed, there were a number of challenges that the structure and those building it had to face, and as a result there are so many unique design elements to the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Even if you aren’t an expert on design, you’ll probably be able to see how the building work changed with time – and appreciate the effort that it would’ve taken to create such an impressive finished piece.
